The strength of a Yurt comes from the balance of opposing forces, because of this, it is important that the Yurt is erected on flat ground. If you need help making your area suitable for a Yurt, we can help. We have moved away from ground mats for our yurts that are up for a longer term (more than a week).
The conditions in Mongolia, although often very extreme for the most part involve less moisture than the UK’s climate, from the air and groundwater. So we think it’s important to act similarly to a nomad preparing for winter in Mongolia and raise the yurt up… the true nomads do this by digging a moat to get the rain away. In the UK we believe a yurt is best presented on a wooden base
This helps us frame the yurt to get the best shape out of the structure.. Allows us to combat the rain and allows the yurt to breathe away from sodden soil. We have developed an array of designs and our carpenters are happy to look at whatever project you might have. Below are some examples of our work.
This base is designed so that it can be put down and made ready to go in day. It can also be dismantled and stored effectively in half a day. The frame of the base is made out of external grade treated timber so if you’d prefer to leave it out it should last as the wood is guaranteed for 10 years. This is a judgement call for you to make as you know your location best!
We have set this base out on an array of foundations from decking risers to concreted decking posts so we can suggest what we feel is best for your land with a site visit. We lay treated sterling board on top as this covers the square meterage cost effectively, is quick to lay down, and has a nice earthy effect once the yurt is up. We have laid floor boards and are happy to look at other options but there is a time and cost implication here, so if you’d like to suggest an alteration, please express an interest and we will quote for it.
This base is more permanent than our nomad base, with 2 foot deep foundations dug and posts concreted in. You can step out of the yurt onto a viewing platform to take in the scenery, as an extra we can build a hut similar to the picture to have as a kitchen, toilet or store.
On this particular design we have built entry stairs at the highest point and created an entry point into a wood fueled hot tub! We are capable of adapting our designs so if you have any suggestions, please ask and we will see what we can do. This base depending on accessibility to utilities, how close we can get materials to the site and the weather should take us between 5 and up to 10 days.
Finally we have the home base. This is more substantial again and is presented here as an example of what our skilled carpenter can do. This particular project takes some time to plan, so please speak to us as early as possible if something like this would interest you.
